It is with deep sadness that the musicians of The Philadelphia Singers have learned of the loss of Wolfgang Sawallisch. Maestro Sawallisch was a deep and abiding musical inspiration to the members of the chorus. From our first encounter with him, singing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at his inaugural concerts as Music Director of The Philadelphia Orchestra to our final encounter, singing the very same work at his final concerts as Music Director, The Philadelphia Singers Chorale grew musically and reaped the benefits of his artistic leadership. Our many performances with Maestro Sawallisch over the years will remain as cherished memories in the hearts of our musicians. We extend our deepest sympathies to our colleagues at The Philadelphia Orchestra and share their sorrow at Maestro Sawallisch's passing. His musical spirit will always be with us.

Carmina Seating Chart - Verizon Hall
Please click on the link below to access the seating chart. There will be paper copies of this chart at rehearsal today. Jonathan asks to keep in mind the following:
1) It's going to be a tight fit! We have to use every seat number, so it's one seat per person. We'll spread out when we can, and it's ok for the people on the ends to spill into the aisles a little bit to make more room.
2) Next to the sopranos (on the bottom of the chart), the extra seats are for the boychoir. They're going to cram in there, and we'll have to see how it fits.
3) If someone isn't at a rehearsal or performance, fill in the empty space to make more room.
4) Today, we will find out about standing and sitting cues.

David Hayes' Retirement
Tonight, at a Philadelphia Singers Chorale rehearsal for Carmina Burana, David Hayes announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2014-2015 season. For a multitude of reasons, this will be a sad departure; our singers will certainly miss David's musical skill and his warm and easy manner. However, it is also an exciting time for our chorus as we embark on a search for our first new artistic director in 22 years.
Please use the comment section below to share your memories of David and your excitement or concerns about moving forward. TPS looks forward to making our singers a part of this process and we welcome all of your feedback and the discourse that will occur over the next few years.

Rehearsal 2/9
Saturday's TPSC#3 Carmina Burana rehearsal takes place from 2pm-4:30pm. At this moment, we do not anticipate the need to cancel rehearsal due to weather related conditions. It seems as if the snow will taper off in time to get the roads clear before Saturday afternoon. If anything changes, we will update this message board immediately. In the meantime, I hope everyone stays warm and safe!

Carmina Burana Seating and Divisi Charts
Singers should look on the divisi chart first to find out exactly what parts they're singing -- it's alphabetical by voice part, so it should be easy to look up. Divisis include "T, M, or B" which stands for Top, Middle, or Bottom when the men or women are divided into 3 parts. For the men only, there's an "a, b, or c" which is for when the tenors or basses divide into 3 parts. Finally, the #20 column refers to Chorus #20, which is a double chorus: a "1" means they're in chorus 1, and a "2" means chorus 2.
