David Hayes' Retirement

Tonight, at a Philadelphia Singers Chorale rehearsal for Carmina Burana, David Hayes announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2014-2015 season.  For a multitude of reasons, this will be a sad departure; our singers will certainly miss David's musical skill and his warm and easy manner.  However, it is also an exciting time for our chorus as we embark on a search for our first new artistic director in 22 years.

Please use the comment section below to share your memories of David and your excitement or concerns about moving forward.  TPS looks forward to making our singers a part of this process and we welcome all of your feedback and the discourse that will occur over the next few years.

  1. Tam pro papa quam pro rege,
    Bibunt omnes sine lege;
    They drink to the pope,
    To the king they regard,
    They drink to everybody,
    No holds barred!
    Today I drink to David,
    The talk of this great town;
    With energy for exc'llance,
    With cheer and even frowns -
    To sing with him means knowing
    The best's your only goal;
    Today's T.P.S. Papa,
    Our David we extol!

  2. Philadelphia Singers Chorale was my first audition and has always been my first love. My musical DNA has been transformed forever, as a member of the Philly Singers. I loved sitting at the back of the bus to share with David and others in the warm and convivial camaraderie after a concert at Carnegie Hall. My greatest thrills, memories and lessons on musicianship have been under the baton of this gentle and wise Maestro! I treasure being a part of American Premieres in Philadelphia and New York, at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fischer Hall. I am also proud to proclaim that I was a part of the opening concert celebrations at the Kimmel Center. David Hayes has made it possible for me to share in the opportunity to be a part of this historic organization's landmark place and legacy in the world of music.
